WUTNWHWL!
Sorry for my silence lately -- been getting distracted with offline things such as Go, video games (Shadow Hearts: From The New World is my latest timesuck) and writing. Yep, writing. Still making slow by steady progress on the Ambitious Cat tales ... I just seem to have a knack for transforming tiny scene sketches into multi-thousand-word monsters.

While the latest story (which stars both Kiasu and the Redeemers -- and a great deal of subsequent fireworks) is still very much In Progress, I ran across a snippet in my old notes tonight that is ready to see the light of day. (For some value of "ready" that includes both "demented but hilarious" and "cringe-inducing," anyway.) It ... well, um, I think I'll just have to let it speak for itself.

So. Never-before-seen SONG LYRICS!

(*A catchy rock riff introduces an upbeat tune of the sort played by quirky yet talented college bands across the nation.*)

This singles bar is getting old.
I don't know why I came.
You look bored too. May I be bold
And ask you for your name?

Me? I'm a creature of the night
A real moonlight child.
You seem like the adventurous type --
Wanna go play ... doggy style?

We can --

(*Suddenly, with no warning, POWER CHORDS! And DRUM FLAILING! The ENTIRE BAND sings in ALMOST-HARMONY! With WOLVES HOWLING! And maybe a banjo, or a theremin, or something!*)

WAKE UP THE NEIGHBORS!
WAKE UP THE NEIGHBORS!
WAKE UP THE NEIGHBORS!
WAKE UP THE NEIGHBORS!
With ...
HOT WEREWOLF LUUUV!

(*Back to the normal instrumentation, but more animated this time, and with 82% fewer pretensions of taking this seriously*)

You know, you're right, my line lacked taste
I'm grateful for the clue
You bit me with such canine grace
And fur is just so you.

Another wolf out cruising bars!
I can't believe my luck!
To celebrate this find of ours
Let's go out back and --

(*POWER CHORDS again! Of course.*)

WAKE UP THE NEIGHBORS!
WAKE UP THE NEIGHBORS!
WAKE UP THE NEIGHBORS!
WAKE UP THE NEIGHBORS!
With ...
HOT WEREWOLF LUUUV!!

I know you're mad, but hear me out
This meeting must be fate
All these little signs -- like just now, when you threw me through that plate-glass window?
I LIKE that in a mate!

(*BRIDGE! Instrumental n' shit!** A drum solo in the finest tradition of epileptic seizures! Wolf howls! Ambulance sirens! Thrills!*)

You're right, I just can't take a no
But still, you can't disguise
Your tail wagging to and fro
The interest in your lovely eyes

I like your style -- hey, there's that smile!
C'mon, I'll take you home
Why, sure -- we'll chase sticks for a while
Before we bury some bones

As we
WAKE UP THE NEIGHBORS!
WAKE UP THE NEIGHBORS!
WAKE UP THE NEIGHBORS!
WAKE UP THE NEIGHBORS!
With ...
HOT WEREWOLF LUUUV!!

Yip! Yip! Yip! Yip!
AROOOOOOOO!!!
(*instrumental thrashing and howling, out*)

Anyway: This shamelessly silly TTU song is called
HOT WEREWOLF LUUUV
Written by The Howl in 1997, for their eponymous first album***

--
* This note left intentionally blank.
** Yes, this is how I wrote it out in the original scribbled lyrics page.
*** But, of course, out here in the non-TTU world it was really written by me.****
**** Oh, shit! I probably didn't want to admit that.

*LOL*

Yep, 'Kiasu' is Singaporean Singlish for 'afraid to lose'.

*lol*

It has a little deeper context behind it -- I might translate it as "obsessively hypercompetitive." But, yep. The name was very much deliberate, although he's kind of a sideways take on the concept.

Interesting to find out via the Wikipedia article that the word's now in the OED.

...I would listen to these guys. I'd have an album, or a couple of mp3's. At least for the shock value.

(Wait. Does the TTU world have an internet of the same calibre as ours? I remember that it diverges back in 199-something, back in the BBS days, right? So...maybe not.)

This one's kind of a one-off for them, honestly; The Howl is better known for their theri-rock social consciousness songs like Over The Horizon (although "Luuuv" certainly gained some cultural traction in its niche market).

The worlds diverged in December 1996, just three years into the September That Never Ended, and a year or two before the real money flooded into the dot-com boom. So the public had at least been exposed to the idea of Internet. However, when magic burst onto the scene it set off a frenzy of buzz and hype and investment -- as big as the Internet has been, working magic means dreams made real -- and that had a stifling effect on Internet technology and spread.

The bottom line is that, in TTU, the Internet is fairly widely recognized and moderately accessible -- but it didn't hit critical mass to become integral to most people's daily lives until much later on; it remained something of an academic curiosity into the mid-Oughts.

... Someone totally, totally should write the music to go along with those lyrics. And then play it at furry cons. INSTANT HIT.

If anyone reading this has a band, I would be happy to help make that happen.

You could always request the services of songstowearpantsto.com (http://www.songstowearpantsto.com/)
Assuming that you're willing to shell out the cash for it.

Thanks for the link! I'm not really in the market for songwriting here -- the idea is to find a band that would love to hit a furry con and play it live -- but it looks interesting and I've filed it for later reference.

Somebody totally needs to make a deliberately cheesy B-level werewolf movie, just to have this as part of the soundtrack.

Um, Lupa? Not to be rude... and yeah, "American Werewolf in London" and "Dog Soldiers" were pretty good, and so's "Brotherhood of the Wolf" if you're really going to stretch the definition... but isn't pretty much every werewolf movie made, cheesy and B-level?

Well, yeah, but I said deliberately cheesy--so kinda like the "Army of Darkness" deliberate cheese, as opposed to one that just happened to end up cheesy.

I don't know how you pulled this off, but you have somehow gotten stuck in my head a song that DOES NOT EXIST.

And SHOULD. Get a band together. I'll learn to play the bass if necessary.

Yeah! I at least get chord progressions and rhythm stuck in my head when I read song lyrics that have some meter to them. I always feel like I have a melody in my head too, but then I'm unable to sing it.

Chi Hurican has a band, and I might forward this along...

I'm picturing a therianthrope version of Spinal Tap. Only fun instead of ridiculous.

Hey :) I got pointed to this entry by premchai21 -- who knows me of a fan of werewolves etcetera -- and I think your journal is pretty interesting (not to mention amusing in many places). I've added you as a friend; I hope that's alright by you, and if you want to return the favour, that'd be nice too. If there's any issue with it, I can take you off again no trouble.

Thanks! I'm much more likely to ramble about dragons than I am about wolves/werewolves, but the TTU setting that this song jigsaws into is a broad examination of therianthropy as urban fantasy -- and I've already got a few stories prominently featuring werewolves there.

(Edited to add: *smacks head* And how could I forget Finders Keepers?)

I didn't get much time on Friday to listen to the electronica you've posted, but what I've heard sounds good. I look forward to hearing the rest.

Neat, I'll read those stories when I have some time; your world setting seems interesting, and maybe I could contribute a little, though I'm no great shakes as a writer. And I figured you would write more on the dragon thing -- I like them a lot too, so it's all good :)

I'm glad you like my music. I think it's good to have a creative outlet, whatever that may be; for me, I find I'm better able to express myself in music than words.

I'm interested in your musings on therianthropy as well, though I've personally drifted away from that a little bit (it comes and goes). Anyway, enough rambling, but thanks for adding me back and it's good to meet you :)

Dude. That is an awesome song.

The only thing missing is a cowbell.

(Quick intro: I'm a random internet person who found your journal randomly and thinks it's interesting. Mind if I add you?)

I've got a fever, and the only cure is more werewolves!
