My favorite holiday
Happy summer solstice!* Would you like to know what I did to celebrate it? I wore three layers of clothing and a fleece hat all day.

No, this isn't another weather complaint ... thank goodness. After my rant, Ma Nature took pity on me, and the sky out here in the California foothills broke open into glorious summer blue. However, since I work at a small ISP, and we have to keep our office heavily refrigerated for the benefit of the servers ... 8+ hours of the day, if I try to dress for the weather I'm miserable and shivering.

Speaking of clothing, though, I figured that now would be an opportune time** to offer a preliminary shot of the much-rumored BayCon impulse purchase:

A Renaissance dragon

This is the first time I've bought anything over $100 without significant pre-budgeting in ... well, a very long time. I think what sealed the deal was having a passing nine-year-old girl squeal in delight while I was trying it on and ask to take a picture of my awesome costume. It's like I was made to fit into it.

(Edited to add: Found the business card! Pendragon Costumes is responsible for this moment of awesome.)

And as long as I'm clearing off the digital camera, here's a sample of the way my brain likes to think outside the box when presented with a set of constrained inputs:

Magnetic poetry abuse

Imagine what this therianthrope could do with a set of LOLMagnetz.

Today's nutty trivia: Did you know that modern American adults are about equally likely to be: in a nuclear family; in a childless marriage; single (living with no other family); or "other"? That melted my brain. I would have guessed nuclear families were far more overrepresented than they really are.

* For those of you in the northern hemisphere. The rest of you can take some consolation in the fact that your days will only be getting longer from here.

*blush* Thank you!

I heard several people comment that I had the posture for it, which is a complete lie: it has the posture for me. The entire day I had it on, I couldn't sully the outfit by slouching. It's one of those outfits that wears you (... cue Soviet Russia joke).

And it gets better in detail: See photo in comment below.

The combination of it and you... positively regal. (And hot.) Glorious.

Seriously, you guys, this flattery is all going straight to my head. Encouraging dragons in egotism is not necessarily a great idea. ;)

(Thank you though!)

That there is some spiffy... I don't even know what you call an outfit like that, but it's nifty. I'm particularly fond of the reddish patches of decoration near the shoulders.

I'm so pleased you charmed a little kid with it! That's one of the main wonders of costuming, in my opinion. I was dithering recently over buying the Iron Beast since it was on sale, but didn't feel I could justify the price... but damn, I do want something to go and be nonhuman in, and make people believe. I keep planning to hit up the costume shop, and hopefully we'll finally do that tomorrow and I'll find something that I can at least work into something believable with a bit of crafting.

It's actually period Renaissance clothing (modulo the very modern socks and complete lack of matching accessories). I'll have a matching belt and pocket watch, at the very least, to go with it; and appropriate leggings and hat should not be difficult, so I can step out of the 1600s with very little additional investment.

The next trick is going to be to steampunk it up just enough that having a dragon wear it would be believable -- by the next con I attend, I should have my custom anthro-Baxil mask and gloves finished (courtesy of Aubriana). :D I have mentally justified this purchase as part of my Baxil costume, even though there is no particular reason a dragon should go Renaissance; dammit, I will make it work.

And to answer your questions: the leather top piece is AFAIK called a doublet and the red leggings (which have a separate leather overstripe) are breeches. The reddish patches of decoration near the shoulder are ... aw, hell, I am obligated to take another photo now:

Leather doublet: close-up

So, yeah, seriously, this thing couldn't have been destined for me more if it had leapt off the rack and strangled me.

Doublet! That was sort of the word that was rattling around in my head, but I had no idea if it was the right one or not; I'm not even sure of the technical definition, other than it fit the vague mental image I had.

And, nice. Yeah. You very much rock the outfit in general, but that detail is... well, it just is.

Custom mask! That is awesome. I always love seeing people as themselves, so much; it gives something to the experience of knowing them and honouring them in your mental images as they are that drawn art can't quite capture, so I'll be looking forward to the (hopefully inevitable) pictures. What's the turnaround time on a set like that, and (if you don't mind saying), how much?

Re the mask - when all is said and done, grand total will be just barely in four digits (which, let's face it, for a from-scratch custom job, is not bad) and ummmm probably two years (but that's because I've spent a long time waiting in her commission queue). When you find the right artist, for the right project, the time and money are worth it (and I've been patiently banking the funds since I knew the stars were right).

*nod* Given other prices I've seen for just masks, it's not bad at all. Her other work looks like absolutely magnificent stuff. (I love those reptilian gloves, to death.)

I still feel like I'd want to be a lot more sure of what I'd want the design to be before I went in for anything really expensive, and I'm notoriously bad at settling on a specific image. But I'm kind of eyeing Qarrazel for if I do go for a serious spendy piece, because I can't get over how real stuff like this looks; it blows me away. Most of her work is furry, but she can work with more solid stuff too. But man, what you're getting looks like it's going to be amazingly realistic too. I'm so glad for you. Wibble. :D

ohmygodsthat'sgorgeous.

Clearly it was made for you. Seriously. I swear that just happens sometimes.

Actually, I also think that fits my mental definition of a 'me costume' for you, may you have many fantastic places to wear it, with Bax Costume and without. (I took a lot of costume classes as a theatre design major. In the end, what it got me was the ability to spot and pull out of a wardrobe costumes for myself and others that reflect some aspect of character as one would use in theatre and would typically never wear outside of the house, but we're ren rats and burners so it works out okay sometimes ;) )

> 'me costume' ... that reflect[s] some aspect of character

Thanks for the kind words! I'm curious ... what is it about that outfit (or about me) that you feel makes that costume so 'me'? Clearly there's a synergy here, but I'll be damned if I can put words to it.

Now you just need a crown. And a throne room. And… a… hmm. Maybe not a sceptre.
