Links to liven up your boring weekend
Before I get started, I'd like to thank y'all for the writing problem suggestions. It was all great food for thought. In the end, I decided to borrow from a master, and experimented with the suggested Alfred Bester-esque solutions; my writing is included below the fold for comments, criticism or praise.

So now all I have to do is work ergoaggrandizetingoscillolarifficociousnessosities into the story somewhere. ];=8) A definition wasn't provided, but from the word roots, my best guess is it means something like "things that increase the work involved in behaving as though one is experiencing the joy of being kissed." A sample sentence is left as an exercise for the reader.

Anyway! A few more random links gleaned from this week's Web surfing:

* Find out what evolution has cost the human race. (Text possibly NSFW but clinical; no naughty images)

* In case you ever wondered how to fairly flip a rigged coin or get a 50/50 proposition resolved over the phone, here you go.

* Poisoned nipples! (It's not what you think. And it's great advice. NSFW only if the word "nipples" or others like it sets off content filters.)

* And I can't believe Marilyn Manson -- Marilyn Manson! -- has beat me to the altar.

--

And here's the text version of the scene:

There was no time to think about it. Just the sword's chant filling his
senses, and the last of his consciousness clinging to a faint thread of pride
-- that even as worthless as he was, he could still save some innocent person's
life from the sword's bloodlust. By the time self-preservation instincts
kicked in, a jerk of his wrist had already set the blade in motion --

his skin parted with little resistance,
                   and the dam broke.
                      . . . . . .
                         YES! NO!
                          a voice a voice
                               exploded
                              in in
                         despair triumph
                        ringing roaring
                           through between
                                  his
                              ears head
                            as he as he
                             spiraled into
                                darkness

As regards the writing: sweet. It's the kind of thing I have to re-read, partly because it's so intricate I need to go over it several different ways, partly because it's so cool I want to go over it several different times. I particularly like the fact that the beginning and end of the formatted passage are linear, yet the parts in between are spiralled.

As regards the links: Darn. Marilyn Manson is married. However will the world cope?

Neat. It looks like a symbol from astrology.

That's a good solution. The splitting of the text before the parallel-tracks part, and the merging and unmerging of the 'parallel' tracks, help cement the simultaneity of the two. Furthermore, the shape of the text reminds one of a double-helix, which is always nice.

(By the way, ergoaggrandizetingoscillolarifficociousnessosities like bad body odor and venereal diseases are usually near the top of the list of people's fears when they leave for a blind date. Or so I assume.)

I definitely like your solution more than any of the ones from the previous thread.

And ergoaggrandizetingoscillolarifficociousnessosities is one hell of a word.

Poisoned nipples: *squeeeeee* I would have thought exactly the same thing on viewing that scene, and have been terribly dissapointed. And now I'm thinking that the most effective way to poison one's nipples (presuming you're using a poison that you would also be affected by) would be to first apply some kind of shield between your skin and the poison... plastic would probably require too high of a melting point, and it would stick to the nipple. Wax would probably be the best, as long as it wasn't too porous - even if so, it'd probably take long enough for the poison to seep through for it to be effective. Also, the "dipping one's nipples in hot wax" scene would be... wow. *gigglesnort*

Nail polish, not wax. :)

ooOOOooh, yes, excellent suggestion!

... not that I'd want to try this nipple-poisoning technique on anyone... but it's a good problem-solving exercise? or something?

Riiiight... a mental exercise. Don't ask me why I know nail polish works well. :)

Well, I can't speak of everybody, but apparently some people actually get off on that sort of thing...

For more cool, twisty writing I would like to recommend the master - Alfred Bester.

That sort of formatting is feautured in the first couple chapters of The Demolished Man, then you get a really great murder mystery with telepaths. Seriously, you can't be any sort of sci-fi fan if you haven't read it. And Babylon 5 fans will especially enjoy it.

Live! On stage! See Marilyn Manson bite the head off of Ozzie Osborn! Also, Live Nude Girls.

On a completely unrelated note (and a good thing, too) are you going to FurCon? If so, would it be possible for elynne to hitch a ride with you from Sacramento down to the the con?

Sorry I spaced out on responding to this -- I'm pretty sure you got your answer from kadyg yesterday, but just so I have it down for the record:

Yes, I'm going.

I'd be happy to take Erin down and back. Will you and she get to visit Grass Valley for a bit before she and I disappear?
