Between transcribing.....
Getting Bax to BayCon seems to have been pretty much taken care of (Thanks, Mr. and Mrs. Werges!) However, getting him BACK to the trail may still be fluid. If it turns out that he needs a ride and you're heading toward the LA-San Bernadino area and don't mind the company, swing by the Jackal Lair (newsletter office) and we'll get everything set up.

Giving him a ride back will be better than doing the pick-up because Bax will be clean. Right now he is very much not.

Depending on when it is he needs the ride - I often go to San Bern for shopping and since Big Bear is my home I could drop him at the foot of the Cougar Crest which links to the PCT after about 2 miles.

No worries - I often take my toddler to the cougar crest. At just shy of 2 he can't do much more than a half mile but still. I think I have a little hiker on my hands. He gets this big old grin everytime we go. :)

Or he could be laughing at my border collie who is trained enough to run off the leash and spends his half mile chasing lizards. *shrug*

Oh not sure if my email went through but I have a friend up here (what a shock :P) whos land backs to the PCT about 5 (or maybe 10) miles north of the cougar crest. If needed (and if she doesn't mind) I might even be able to drop him there and save a little time.

Dang it! I'm sorry I missed you. I hiked through Big Bear last week; I'm now out in Crestline and my next PCT leg will begin at Interstate 15 and head west.

I would have really loved a friendly face in Big Bear, too. Navigating between BBC and BBL by foot/bus/attempted hitchhike didn't do much for my morale. As you could tell by the journal.

LOL well it would have been fun to meet a thru-hiker. I know I really want to do it one day if I can. Who knows maybe when my son is a good deal older :) Do you know if people are allowed to do the trail by horseback? I have friends who might loan me a horse or two (or just come with). At the very least I know I could get away with a nice week long ride - 3 days out, rest, 3 days back with a mule or two for hauling. :D

Lemme know if you need a ride back to the trail.

To answer your questions -

1) There should still be people heading through town -- you're probably too late to meet the big wave, but go to the Big Bear City Fire Department, which is pretty much the hub of thru-hiker activity, and you can catch some of the late starters. Just head to the front desk and ask if there are any hikers around - the lady (Deanne?) should be able to show you around.

2) Absolutely! The PCT is an equestrian and hiker trail. There have been only a few sections so far I couldn't imagine doing on a horse (and you can always dismount for those). Most of the trail is very gently graded and with good footing.

And thanks again.

:D Deann huh - I know her. Talked to her a few times. I was tring to set up something where I brought my chair in and worked on the firefighters but... <-- I am a massage therapist.

Have fun at baycon - I haven't been to a good con in years. The whole business owner, new mother thing slowes me down. :)

Not true! The Werges gave me use of their shower and laundry machine. :P
