This definitely calls for an "Oh, snap"
John McCain -- yes, John McCain -- just unintentionally made the best possible argument for nationalized health care I've heard this year. Via Krugman:
Here’s what McCain has to say about the wonders of market-based health reform:

Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation.

Nothing could possibly go wrong; they're all insured through AIG. </snark>

I had to crack up when I heard this (unlikely) motivation ascribed to his comments...

Anonymous Liberal says, "[I]f we bring the same approach to health care that we brought to the banking industry, maybe in eight years or so, our health care system will completely collapse and the government will have to step in and take over. Voila! A national health care system. Brilliant."
(via lily)

Someone else was saying that the Republicans are starting to sound slightly like crypto-Communists, "bound on causing the government to take over the economy by making it fail one piece at a time." Again, unlikely -- but it's always weird when you see the right bending so far backward to deny reality that it starts to wrap around and look like the alleged liberal conspiracy at work. :)

Barack Obama had as much to say about it: "If we allow Washington to do to the Health Care industry that we let them do to the Banking Industry, America, this is a choice that we cannot afford to be wrong in." (paraphrased)

... I read "banking" as "baking" for a moment there. Gah.
