I bet you're bored ...
... otherwise, you wouldn't be sitting here reading your Livejournal friends list.

So, here's a brain-teaser for you. I posted it to my journal (this is my LJ) a few days ago, but nobody has come up with the right answer yet -- except my mother, who I am very proud of; but she wrote me privately -- so you still have a chance to be the first to publically proclaim the puzzle Solved.

I have taken the ten digits 0-9 and arranged them in a sequence based on a non-complicated and easily explainable rule. Although the rule is mathematically based, it should require no formal mathematical experience (beyond a high-school education) to figure out -- especially in this day and age.

Here is the sequence, with one digit removed:

1, 2, 4, 6, 3, 5, 0, 9, 7.

My question is: Where does the digit 8 go? Have fun. ];=8)

Current Mood: deviousdevious
Current Music: "Durandal," Xenosaga soundtrack

The first time each number appears, in order, in a doubling sequence.

1, 2, 4, 8,16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16384, 32786

The full pattern is 124863507.

The last number in the sequence I wrote is the limit of unsigned int 16-bit math.

Wow... my brain doesn't work like that. I tried to find a linear sequence, and eventually a squared sequence based on initial or final numbers, but nothing made a lot of sense. Looking for the first time a digit appeared... impressive.

Wow. I never saw that coming.

I was thinking it had SOMETHING to do with doubling, but nothing like that.

Kudos, o Kistaro the more-mathematically-minded-than-I.

Re: Congratulations!

Ooh, I'm right? Yay!

Heh. I should have gotten it on the first pass; I'm a volunteer at the computer gallery for a science museum!

Heh. I knew where it went even though I didn't know why. "1,2,4,6" is a pretty big hint.
