Answer key

Will prevent you from donating for life: (1 point each)
Shooting heroin: TRUE.
Having a pacemaker: FALSE.
Monogamous gay man: TRUE.
Many-partnered lesbian: FALSE. (Yep, sure makes sense ...)
One male-male encounter in 1980: TRUE. (This is why I can't donate blood, although the date's slightly off.)
Fibromyalgia: FALSE. (But if you've ever had a corneal transplant, you're barred for life!)
Native Nigerian: TRUE. (Due to concerns over AIDS, apparently.)
Year in Greece: TRUE.
13 weeks in London: TRUE. (This and Greece are due to concerns over mad cow disease.)
Chronic acne: FALSE. (And aren't you all relieved to know that?)

Will prevent you from donating that day: (1 point each)
Stitches: TRUE. (2-day waiting period even if no infection.)
Recent marijuana use: FALSE. (But you can't be stoned during the process.)
Recent clove cigarette: FALSE.
Depression: FALSE. (Unless it makes you feel uncomfortable with giving blood.)
Menstruation: FALSE.
Gave birth: TRUE. (Six-week waiting period.)
Had an abortion: FALSE. (For elective abortions, which was hopefully implied.)
Parakeet handling: FALSE. (Made up to catch those being too blindly cynical about the blood rules.)

WON'T disqualify you for 12 months (worth 2 points)
The one that WON'T disqualify you for a year is having the STD herpes.
Any tattoo, any cocaine ingestion through the nose, and
any stay in a correctional institution disqualify you for a year.

Pretty crazy, huh?

I'm pretty sure they "strongly discourage" you from giving blood if you're menstruating.

Out of 20? 5.

I assume the rules in the UK would have to be different to take account of the "13 weeks in London" thing, but I'm still pretty sure there are a few reasons why I'm not allowed to donate.

Just one point - the difference between gay male and lesbian sex is actually for good reasons as regards transmittal of sexual diseases, especially HIV. Penetrative gay sex is much riskier in terms of transmitting diseases, due to the relatively high risk of minor internal injury mixed with potentially infectious bodily fluids. Of course, this argument also applies to women who have anal sex with males.

There's a strong argument for promiscuity being a bar anyway. One gay male encounter twenty years ago is absolutely ridiculous. The BSE argument is well dodgy because it's neurological tissue that transmits the disease.

The problem with blood is that it's such a perfect disease carrier. Blood agencies have to try and minimise the risk while at the same time keeping the pool of potential donors wide enough. Probably what's really needed is a better screening programme, either before you give blood (checks for diseases, blood counts etc) or on donated blood before its used.

At my place, add 'getting your ears pierced.'

Also 'visiting Hatti, or sleeping with a man that had sex with another man since 1978.'

Oh, and add 'traded sex for drugs.' I always wondered why they didn't add 'traded sex for possitive self-image' because I've known a girl who has slept with an amazing number of men just for that reason. She never get's her possitive self-image, so she sleeps with someone else. Seems like she's just as much at risk as trading sex for cash or coke.

I like the way they include 'Weed', 'Pot' and 'Ganga' next to 'Marijuana'... we want the drug-users to understand what we mean, even if they have no real grasp of the English language.

But not the monogamous homosexual males, noo. Everyone knows that HIV just materialises in those circumstances, and that hetereosexuals can't catch it.

Actually, I'm banned for life. I have a certain high hormone level which suggests I once may have had a liver infection....so, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I think I got 15.
Mostly because I've given blood often enough and recently enough that I'm somewhat familiar with the questions. I don't remember them asking about some of those, though. (like Greece)

Also, you can get away with visiting the Mad Cow coutries if you were vegetarian at the time, I believe.

I didn't take it, I just wanted to learn the answers. Holy crap. o_o Well, just these disqualifications I'm still able to donate blood. (My last piercing was more than a year ago. I'd better go get another one.) What if you're a female who has had relations with a man who had relations with a man? Just kind of ridiculous there. Mostly, I just want to have relations with people. I love being a multi-partnered lesbian. So many relations.

You may or may not be surprised to know that that situation is covered. Any person having sex with a "high-risk" individual (e.g. a gay man) has to wait a year. At least I sorta think that's what it means. The way they word it, it's ambiguous; it could just mean that paying for sex with a gay man forces the wait ...
