Nifty LJ tip of the day
If you use the Web client, you can assign an icon to custom moods by both selecting something other than "None, or other:" in the drop-down menu (this controls the icon); and typing something in the "Other" text-entry box (this controls the text).

This is extremely counter-intuitive, but it works. Took me over two years to learn.

I think the simultaneous "selecting of mood" and "typing of mood" that shows the icon and custom text is a new thing -- it used to not work (by showing the mood associated with the icon you select). So, actually, it didn't take you that long to figure out. :-)
